The transformation of O’Connell Street into Auckland’s newest shared space. In September 2014 O’Connell St. was the latest crown of a series of major improvements in the city centre. O’Connell Street was described as a carpark with two tiny pedestrian strips (generously called footpaths) along each side. Even car traffic had a tight squeeze.
O’Connell St. was definitely a challenge with it upright buildings in such a narrow space but at street level, it felt broad and expansive.
The assignment was to capture this new sense of freedom and convey a friendlier environment for all that use this lane.
